Sounding more like The Clash than Madonna, London trio (soon to be quartet)
Ciccone are making themselves heard above the din of up-and-comers. TNT
caught up with co-vocalist Rebekah Delgado.
Descibe your sound
It's kind of catchy, messed up rockk 'n' roll with attitude. Live
we play our more catchier songs so we're more like The Primitives or Blondie.
But recorded we're a real mix between punky pop stuff and slower sad songs
like The Velvet Underground. It depends on whether you see us live or
not, really.
By choosing the name Ciccone, do you realise you'll forever be associated
with Madonna?
[Slowly] Yeees. Also, people spell it wrong whic his really annoying.
Or they can't pronounce it. Or they spell it 'chick', as in the small
bird. It's kind of hindered us a bit, I think. At first I didn't want
to use it but it's grown on me.
What was your favourite Madonna phase?
Like A Prayer, definitely! It was a brilliant albim - it was more of her
bones - the real thing. It was more personal. It wasn't just writing for
people. The album cover was quite nice as well. I don't know if you remember
- it had beads on it or something.
The Ramones or The Sex Pistols?
Oooh, can I have both? The Pistols have definialy influenced us more
though.
Given enough dosh, would you let one of your songs be used for a car
advertisement?
It would depend on how skint we were. Something like that now would
make so much difference to our lives and we'd be able to do music full
time, which is what we wanna do. But if we already had money, then probably
not. And the politics behind the company would be important, too.
What can people expect from a Ciccone gig?
Jumping around, sweating - just high energy, really.
What's the most exciting thing going on in British music at the moment?
I think the scene we're in with Art Brut and The Rocks and all those
bands like that.
Would that be the New Cross scene, by any chance?
Yeah, that's right. We've got a little scene going - it's what we
came to London for. We all help each other out and we all meet up and
it's just like a little family. We all gossip a bit too much about each
other but it's really nice and it's exciting. I think there's enough talent
for something to happen.
