Ciccone Rebekah Delgado - Vocals,
Guitar Buy |
Reviews - Look At You Now One Refreshing aspect to Ciccone's indie guitar pop is the fact that
lead vocalist Rebekah Delgado sings in a London accent, giving this track
a likeable edge. The band have been making music for years now and have
finally finished recording their debut album Eversholt Street, which is
due out in September. It's been ages since we had anything on Ciccone on this site... Well,
their debut album sees the light of day next month, and this is the first
single taken from it, which you can buy in shops now! And in typical Ciccone
fashion, it's a blast of indiepop joy. The fact that the [band's debut album] is named after the road that turns
into Camden High Street gives you a musical clue as to where Ciccone are
at. Though citing many New York influences (Blondie/Velvets/Lou Reed etc.),
this is a very Brit(pop)ish number. Catchy, sweet and a little rough around
the edges this could easily fit onto the Rough Trade indie-pop compilation
[review in the same issue], which I gess ought to be taken as a compliment!
Also bonus marks for the repetition of the line 'Give me 50p
' Ciccone's "Look At Me Now" is one of the best indie pop singles
we've heard in a long while and sounds like a female fronted Libertines.
Taking the female perspective to Razorlights "Rock N Roll Lies"
with a refrain of "give me 50p and i'll show you a good time".
Ciccone have got big things in front of them. As the track kicks in you may be forgiven for thinking youve stumbled on to a stray Libertines or 2020s track, but the dulcet tones of vocalist Rebekah Delgado soon set you straight. Look at you now is one of those tracks every girl is going
to wish she could perform. With a definitive punky edge and lyrics like,
Give me 50p and Ill show you a good time, Ciccone have
really pulled it out the hat with their latest single. Look at you now is a cheeky, contemporary take on brilliant
retro themes; Ciccone really pull it off. 7/10 Call me a misty-eyed ex-Londoner, but Im feeling a bit nostalgic
for the Bull & Gate; being part of an audience of eight, all of us
clutching warm bitter and optimistic that well discover something
exciting. Look At You Now has taken me right back there. With
its bouncy drums, Undertones riff and utterly irresistible chorus, Ciccone
make old-fashioned indie pop sound shiny and new. In Rebekah Delgado,
they possess a 24-carat goddess of infectious vocal melody and have-your-eye-out
lyrical phrasing, of the type not heard since the heady days of The Siddeleys
Johnny Johnson. Ciccone are what British pop is missing right now and
exactly what I used to hang around Kentish Town hoping to find all along.
Ciccone's latest single (following on from the indie hits 'Forget Your
False Messiahs' and 'All Stacked Up') is a bouncy alternative floor filler
that has all the happy pop hooks and a darker lyrical underbelly. There
is healthy knowing cynicism to 'Look At You Now' that is given form with
humour, charm and energy; the repeated refrain of 'Give me 50p, I'll show
you a good time' is great to dance to, sing along to but disturbing if
you choose to engage your brain over your feet. Ciccone's influences may
more generally be new wave and 50's rock but for this track they are more
akin to the great indie disco of the early 90's like Sleeper or The Primitives.
Unquestionably the best song released whilst we were away, this is something
you probably missed. If so, go along to www.hmv.co.uk and buy it RIGHT
FUCKING NOW. I don't' care if you're not going to eat for the next week
because of the £2 you'll spend on this, and in any case, you can't
get much food for £2. Not enough for a week at least. But what you
can get is an awesome awesome awesome song. If you're sensible, and don't
actually like The Libertines, or Franz or whoever the press is hyping
this week, get this instead. Because this is poppy enough to be on the
radio, good enough to be on your stereo, and it's got a girl singing 'give
me 50p and I'll give you a good time'. It's an anthem about the pointlessness
of tarting yourself up and going out on the lash, something you'd wholeheartedly
agree with if you've ever been to Reading on a Saturday night outside
of festival time. It's got a tune The Only Ones would kill Pulp and Blur's
children to get hold of. It's like all the good bits of punk and britpop
mixed together. If you didn't like any of those, get it anyway. Just fucking
try something new, it'll be the best bit of advice ever. Seriously, this
will improve your life about a zillion times more than Kerry beating Bush
to the White House. Drop your campaign tools, and get this CD? Do you
hear me? I know I sound more like a salesman than a reviewer here, but
once in a while, something so good comes along that the thought of someone
reading your shitty review and not hearing the song is too much to take.
Seriously, just get it, and it'll all be OK. After being hanging around the underground for what seems like an age,
Ciccone finally come up with the goods. 'Look at You Know' is perfect
bubblegum pop, much in the vein of Kenickie, or even, gulp
Sleeper's
finer moments. But don't tell them I said that. What's more, Ciccone's
singer has the most alluring voice of the month. Well done, whoever you
are! There are a lot of strong female fronted Rock bands coming through at the moment and Ciccone can definitely be named as one of them. Front woman Rebekah Delgado has an extremely strong vocal talent with every single note she sings powering through your entire body. On this track, male backing vocals on the chorus saying 'Look At You Now' create a strong backbone and further the appeal of the track. Ciccone are a good band making exciting music, which is full of strength, style, and charisma. I really feel that this band will go far in the industry as everything about them just sounds so good - great drumming and guitarist skill is shown as well as these tremendous vocals I have already spoken about. Although there is only one track here there is enough going on in the one track to keep you happy for a good while, it is really hard to tire of this track as it is just so amazing, and interesting to listen to. The band have frequently been played on Radio1 as well as their video making it onto both MTV and Kerrang - this is no surprise as they really are a talented band and truly deserve to get this great exposure. I cant wait till I get my hands on the bands new album - it should be
really great to listen to if this amazing single is anything to go by.
I am sure that this single will lead the band to further success as it
is intelligently written, and ever so fun to listen to. It is one of those
tracks that when coming on the radio you will stop whatever you happen
to be doing at the time and just listen to the track in amazement. 4/5 |
